For a surcharge in the Trend configuration, you could get fog lights, a chrome grille, an onboard computer, and a three-spoke sports steering wheel covered with leather. The top-end Focus Ghia has electric mirrors and all windows, a cooled glove box, a 4-spoke steering wheel, a leather-wrapped shift lever, footwell lighting, etc.

In 2008, the model was restyled, and several trim levels were repeatedly updated later. For cars of 2011, it included LE (Limited Edition), Comfort, and Titanium modifications, and in the full version, such options as cruise control, leather or combined interior, heated seats, separate climate control, etc. 

Engines & Gearboxes

The Ford Focus is available with 1.4 to 2-litre petrol or 1.8-liter diesel engines. If the base 1.4-litre engine’s power is low – 80 hp, then the two-litre 145-horsepower engine gives the Ford Focus excellent dynamics.

As the “golden mean” in terms of power, fuel consumption, and driving performance, versions with engines of 1.6 (100 and 115 hp) and 1.8 litres (125 hp) should be considered. Focus, on the other hand, with a 115-hp diesel engine.

Due to objective reasons, it was not in high demand, although in terms of high torque and elasticity of work, which allows not resorting to frequent gear changes, this is an exciting option. Petrol engines were offered a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual gearbox, while diesel engines were only presented with a manual transmission. All vehicles are front-wheel drive.

Suspension Parts

Due to the extended wheelbase, the car is characterized by good stability and quickly and confidently takes turns. The Ford Focus suspension (front – MacPherson strut, rear – multi-link) provides sufficient Comfort, well swallowing the flaws of South African roads. It is essential to add that cars, in other respects, were initially adapted to South African operating conditions: engine compartment protection and an enlarged washer reservoir, a powerful battery, a full-size spare wheel, rubber mats, threshold protection, and mudguards.

Road Safety

Last of all, Ford Focus causes complaints about safety. It is one of the most reliable cars: the Euro NCAP test carried out in 2004 showed a very high level of occupant protection, including child protection.

The list of available equipment includes front and side airbags, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), and brake force distribution (EBD). There is a rain sensor and a self-dimming rear-view mirror in expensive trim levels. You can equip the car with a stability control system and a tire pressure monitoring system for an additional fee.

Final Thoughts

Ford Focus has always been characterized by affordable prices, which initially made this model one of the contenders for the “people’s car” title. Even the first Focus served as a starting point for many who decided to change from obsolete domestic models to more modern ones at that time.

The second generation continued and developed success. These cars are distinguished by the most favourable price/quality ratio and are represented on the market by a diverse and broad group.
